Hombanna has a cast of mostly newcomers and IT engineers is about the issue of forest encroachment and environmental protection that is misused by powerful people and the government.
A young journalism student gets interested in the story of Hombanna, a farmer in a remote village in a forest area. She travels to Malnad to find out more details regarding this from a Lawyer who lives there. On the way, her driver gets scared by a strange man and believes the place is haunted.
When she meets the lawyer, he is initially not interested and says it is a closed chapter. However she insists that he help her with the story she wants to write.
Hombanna and a few people were farmers who lived in a very small village. The forest area surrounding it was believed to be haunted by the ghost of a man who was killed by a powerful man in the area. The dead man’s son is helped by a Naxalite movement which wants to protect the forest from conservation programs which aim to move the villagers from the forests under the excuse of protecting it.
The rest of the movie is about how the journalist slowly tries to discover the truth about what happened to Hombanna and others in the forest
