Kanooru Heggadithi is a National Award winning movie by Girish Karnad based on the novel by Kuvempu.
Kanooru Heggadithi is set in the Malnad area before Independence. Ramiah and Hooviah are returning from Mysore where they’re studying. They are attracted by Gandhi’s call for independence and have positive views on the future of the country. Chandre Gowda (Girish Karnad) has recently married his third wife Subbamma (Tara) from a poor family and is a serious and strict man. He is Ramiah’s father and uncle of Hooviah.
From the beginning Subbamma is not able to adjust to the new house. She is a rebel and does not accept that she has to submit to her husband and any other people. She and the other two older wives don’t get along and she refuses to accept her role as a humble wife who works in the kitchen. This leads to quarrels among them and even with Chandre Gowda.
On the journey back to the village, Ramiah and Hooviah meet with a small accident and they decide to stop at a relative’s house where Ramiah’s proposed future wife lives. How all these characters affect each other and Subbamma’s rebellious nature forms the rest of the plot.
